Governor, Imphal Archbishop, others send message of peace and brotherhood on Christmas

Christmas (IPA: /krɪsməs/), also referred to as Christmas Day, is an annual holiday celebrated on December 25 that marks and honors the birth of Jesus of Nazareth.[2][3] The day marks the beginning of the larger season of Christmastide, which lasts twelve days.[4] The nativity of Jesus, which is the basis for the anno Domini system of dating, is thought to have occurred between 7 and 2 BC.[5] December 25 is not thought to be Jesus' actual date of birth, and the date may have been chosen to correspond with either a Roman festival,[6] or with the winter solstice.[7]
Modern customs of the holiday include gift-giving, church celebrations, and the display of various decorations—including the Christmas tree, lights, mistletoe, nativity scenes and holly. Santa Claus (also referred to as Father Christmas, although the two figures have different origins) is a popular mythological figure often associated with bringing gifts at Christmas. Santa is generally believed to be the result of a syncretization between Saint Nicholas and elements from pagan Nordic and Christian mythology, and his modern appearance is believed to have originated in 19th century media.
Christmas is celebrated throughout the Christian population, but is also celebrated by many non-Christians as a secular, cultural festival. Because gift-giving and several other aspects of the holiday involve heightened economic activity among both Christians and non-Christians, Christmas has become a major event for many retailers.
IMPHAL, Dec 24: The Governor Gurbachan Jagat in a message has sent his greetings to the people of Manipur, specially the Christians of the state, on the auspicious and joyous occasion of Christmas.Observing that Lord Jesus came to this world to build a new world order based on peace, justice and equality of mankind, the Governor said that his message of love, mercy, forgiveness, compassion, benevolence and sacrifice had become more important in the present situation when the atmosphere in society was marred by bickerings, bitterness and social tensions. While celebrating Jesus` birth, while paying our obeisances to the apostle of peace, we should rededicate ourselves to the ideals, principles and eternal values espoused by him, the Governor said. While wishing the people of Manipur a merry Christmas, the Governor prayed that let the principles and messages of Jesus guide mankind to build a prosperous society and a peaceful world.

India asks US, China, Saudi to put pressure on Pak

New Delhi: Mounting its diplomatic offensive, India has impressed upon the US and Pakistan's two key allies, China and Saudi Arabia, to pressurise Islamabad to take concrete action against those behind the Mumbai attacks.
External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee is understood to have conveyed to US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jeichi and Saudi Foreign Minister Saud Al-Faisal India's dissatisfaction over token actions by Pakistan against those responsible for the Mumbai terror strikes.
Huge evidence collected in 26/11 case: Police
Mukherjee, who had telephonic conversation with Rice and Yang and met Al-Faisal, apprised them about the latest situation in Indo-Pak ties which are witnessing a new chill, particularly because of Islamabad's denial mode.
During the telephonic conversations on Thursday night, Mukherjee is believed to have told Rice and Yang that Pakistan was not doing enough against those behind the Mumbai carnage and that the US and China should put pressure on it to ensure that those responsible for the carnage are brought to justice.
Full coverage: Mumbai 26/11
Rice is understood to have conveyed to Mukherjee that the US is keen to see that the perpetrators of Mumbai attacks are punished and is persuading Pakistan to act in concrete terms in this regard.
Yang, while condemning the attacks, agreed that the perpetrators should be punished.
During his meeting with the Saudi Minister, Mukherjee noted that India had so far exercised restraint despite the outrage in the country over the attacks.
The Saudi Foreign Minister, while describing terrorism as an "evil" and "cancer," underlined that all countries needed to cooperate to "destroy" the scourge completely.

Iraqis demand release of shoe-hurling journalist

BAGHDAD (AP) — Thousands of Iraqis took to the streets Monday to demand the release of a reporter who threw his shoes at President Bush in anger at U.S. policies, as support for the act and the journalist flowed in from across the Arab world.
The protests came as suicide bombers and gunmen targeted Iraqi police, plus U.S.-allied Sunni guards and civilians, in a series of attacks Monday that killed at least 17 people and wounded more than a dozen others, officials said.
The journalist, Muntadhar al-Zeidi, was being held by Iraqi security Monday and interrogated about whether anybody had paid him to throw his shoes at Bush during a press conference Sunday in Baghdad, said an Iraqi official.

Showing the sole of your shoe to someone in the Arab world is a sign of extreme disrespect, and throwing your shoes is even worse. Iraqis whacked a statue of Saddam with their shoes after U.S. Marines toppled it to the ground after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.
Al-Zeidi was immediately wrestled to the ground after throwing the shoes, by Iraqi security guards. But the incident raised fears of a security lapse in the heavily guarded Green Zone where the press conference took place. Reporters were repeatedly searched and asked to show identification before entering the compound, which houses al-Maliki's office and the U.S. Embassy.
Meanwhile, newspapers across the Arab world Monday printed front-page photos of Bush ducking the flying shoes, and satellite TV stations repeatedly aired the incident, which was hailed by the president's many critics in the region.

Abductions mar Intl Rights Protection day

A series of abduction cases apparently to demand ransom in the past 48 hours undermined the observance of International Human Rights day today. As preparations were underway to observe the day so as to highlight the ever burgeoning cases of human rights violation in this insurgency scarred State, gunmen said to be activists of an armed group took into custody the village chief of Thayong last night followed by a similar incident of ab-duction of two RIMS offi- cials earlier in the evening. nother case of abduction took place yesterday with unidentified persons whisking away one Pungai Hungyo, Secretary of Adimjati Shiksha Ashram, Chingmeirong from his office.A resident of Tangkhul Avenue, Pungai is an elderly person and his abduction and possible exposure to the chill of winter season is an inhumane act, said a release of Tangkhul Students’ union Imphal (Tangkhul Katamnao Long Imphal) while appealing to all concerned to immediately release Pungai. The inhumane and mindless action of the abductors with the sole motive to extract money is all the more disgusting, the Union expressed. Moreover, it is reported that three officials of Khadi and Village Industries were whisked away by armed persons from a Churachand-pur district location today.Regarding the abduction of the two officials, a statement issued today by the Media Advisor, RIMS said a complaint lodged with the police enlisted the missing duo as Assistant Engineer Ng Robindro of Khurai Thoidingjam Leikai and SO Y Sujeet from Sega Road. The complaint mentioned of involvement of KCP (Ibungo Ngangom) group activists in the abduction of the two from within the RIMS complex yesterday afternoon. With the abductors reportedly setting a deadline of December 12 to cough up Rs 3 crore to secure release of the duo an emergency meeting of RIMs employees was held today during which ‘it was resolved that it is not possible to pay the ransom’, the Media Advisor maintained.

Economic blockade relaxed for six days

In response to the appeal of Works Minister K Ranjit and MLAs of Senapati district, the Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA) has agreed to relax the economic blockade on NH-39 temporarily for six days.On the other hand 34 loaded trucks and 56 tankers crossed Mao gate today afternoon. The student body, however, refused to lift the blockade completely which has been in force since November 1.The SDSA acceded to relax the blockade for six days after a four hour long meeting at Senapati indoor stadium today. The meeting was attended by Works Minister K Ranjit, MLAs M Thorii, K Raina, Doukhomang Khongsai, PWD officials, president of the Truck Owners’ Welfare Association H Ranjit, secretary Y Lukeshwar, secretary of Manipur Drivers’ Welfare Association Tomba and representatives of SDSA.According to the agreement, the economic blockade will be relaxed till midnight of November 19.On their part, Works Minister K Ranjit and the Senapati MLAs maintained that six days relaxation is too short. Even as the Minister and the MLAs strongly urged the student representatives to relax the blockade till December, the student leaders refused to budge. Rather they asked the Government representatives to start the highway repairing work during the period of blockade relaxation in a manner that would be satisfactory to the public .The student body asserted that they will call off the blockade only after seeing progress of the work. In case the highway development work does not make due progress, the blockade will be reimposed, they maintained. To this stance of the SDSA, Works Minister K Ranjit said that the economic blockade being imposed to repair the highway has been ironically impeding highway development work as materials including bitumen required for repairing road could not be brought in. He expected that a new green Imphal would materialize in five years. Commencing from August this year, more than 7000 trees were planted around Mapal Kangjeibung Area, inside Kangla, Governor Road, Paona Bazar, Thangal Bazar and along National Highway No 39 from North AOC to Hicham Yaicham Pat in Imphal. About 5000 fruit bearing trees were planted inside the Kangla. Dr Loken said, “We had a good co-ordination with the plant growers. They planted the trees and the PDA staff fenced the plants for protection. The plant growers have been taking care of the plants daily till it fully grows. We are more conscious about the indigenous plants of Mani-pur. That is why we are planting trees like Heinou, Theibong, Chingthrao, Bo-kul, Jam, Nageshwar and Leihao.”“We need to develop a good environment for our better living in due course. Imphal is getting fresh air due to the greeneries preserved in the Raj Bhavan Complex, Kang-la and Mongbahanba For- est ,” he added. <>

(JOKE) Funny Thing About Politics

Whether Democrat or Republican, you should get a kick out of this!

A little boy goes to his dad and asks, 'What is Politics?'
Dad says, 'Well son, let me try to explain it this way: I am the head of the family , so call me The President.
Your mother is the administrator of the money, so! we call her the Government. We are here to take care of your needs, so we will call you the People. The nanny, we will consider her the Working Class. And your baby brother, we will call him the Future.

Now think about that and see if it makes sense.' So the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what Dad has said.

Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him. He finds that the baby has severely soiled his diaper. So the little boy goes to his parents' room and finds his mother asleep. Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny's room Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the nanny. He gives up and goes back to bed.

The next morning, the little boy says to his father, 'Dad, I think I understand the concept of politics now.'
The father says, 'Good, son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about.

The little boy replies, ''The President is screwing the Working Class while the Government is sound asleep. The People are being ignored and the Future is in deep shit.''

(Joke) Monkey Talk.... Stock Talk

Once upon a time in a village, a man appeared and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for Rs10.

The villagers seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest and started catching them.

The man bought thousands at Rs10 and as supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their effort.
He further announced that he would now buy at Rs.20.

This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again.

Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms.

The offer rate increased to Rs25 and the supply of monkeys became so little that it was an effort to even see a monkey, let alone catch it! The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at Rs.50...!

However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy on behalf of him. In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers.

Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has collected. I will sell them to you at Rs35 and when the man returns from the city, you can sell it to him for Rs.50." The villagers squeezed up with all their savings and bought all the monkeys.
